Today I learned that decompression sickness is called "the bends" after a fashion involving high heels, a tight laced corset, and a bustle that first appeared around 1820 and repeated (as fashions do) in the late 1860s patterned after a style of ancient Greek sculpture and called "The Grecian Bend". Stooped workers with decompression sickness from working on the foundations of the Brooklyn bridge in the 1870s reminded people of the fashion. IMHO with modern eyes, this look has a steampunk Tyrannosaurus vibe
