I watched the 1991 Addams Family the other day and was thinking, "Just how much are the monthly expenses?" From the way Tully carries it and this image I'm guessing there are about 1,000 doubloons in the briefcase. A doubloon is roughly 1/5 of a troy ounce of gold. ~1,000 doubloons = ~200 oz. of gold, which in 1991 prices is ~$60,000 USD. In terms of purchasing power that's ~$130,000 USD in 2022 . At current gold prices it's ~$360,000 USD. Gomez fills the briefcase using a scale, so he is only thinking about the gold value, but in terms of numismatics, these things would sell to collectors at a minimum of $1,000 each, up to $7,500 or so depending on rarity and condition, so the practical value of a briefcase full of doubloons is in the millions. So, to completely undermine the plot of the movie, there's no need to rob the vault. By pocketing the difference between the gold value Gomez expects and numismatic value Tully could get selling the coins to collectors, Tully would be ahead by millions every month. #ThreeInTheMorningThoughts
