The Daily Colonist, August 5, 1914

« previous next »

News out of Victoria 100 years ago:
- The paper is full of drum-beating patriotism. Almost every article is about Canadians lining up across the country to serve the Empire.
- Attached here is a little programme on just who's who in the war:
- Britain's declaration of war against Germany is explained. Britain is bound by treaty to defend Belgium but Germany is demanding unimpeded passage through Belgium and warning that any resistance will be an act of war. On a personal note, my maternal grandparents, living in Belgium, are 10 (grandmother) and 14 (grandfather) at the time.
- The propaganda machine is in full swing. The man who a few days ago was "Emperor William", is now "Kaiser Wilhelm" and an article "explains" the German position in an intentionally feeble and contradictory way.
- On the editorial page is a politely worded caution that German-Canadians should keep their mouths shut and their opinions to themselves.
