Nearly Not Homeless

« previous next »

I just got back from my daily walk up the street and got encouraging news. Power, gas, and water are back on again. They were doing inspections of the suites at the point I was there so I couldn't go in but once those are complete I should be able to go in an turn the servers back on. There is still an issue with the buildings security system and until that is fixed they won't allow anyone to live in the building (there are security guards on duty in the mean time). With luck I could be home tomorrow. Obviously my housewarming is off - I think the 8th of November would be the day to do it now. That'll make for a fun weekend: party on the 8th, Sin City on the 9th, holiday Skank on the 10th - woo!

The people in the apartment across the hall from me, exact same layout as Nick and Sandi's old place, moved out. I imagine several other people have been spooked, too. Those that are looking for apartments should consider the place. This is my third apartment fire and I can assure you this building is no more or less safe than any other. Even in the all-concrete building equipped with sprinklers I lived in in Gastown a fire on the second floor caused smoke and water damage in most of the rest of the building. Any apartment building built prior to the early 80's is going to have asbestos between the floors and in the interior walls, and if the building is post-war, those walls and floors won't be nearly as thick and well-built as the ones in this building are. I'm not moving - I'm still a block away from work and that kicks ass - but it was fun having so many gothy neighbours.

I think, however, after having relied on the horseshoe up my ass to come through these three fires unscathed, it's about time I got some insurance. Not to mention that fireproof safe I was talking about before the fire.

I'm looking forward to getting my kitties out of prison (I went to visit them yesterday in the kennel and they looked really sad in their little cells). I'm looking forward to having Elaine over for coffee sans flames shooting from neighbouring windows. I'm looking forward to sleeping in my own bed. I'm looking forward to finishing unpacking. But I'm not looking forward to what the fridge is going to smell like. Ick. But at least it will be defrosted!
