[March 9] "Brown! Brown! Brown!"
on Instagram

[March 9] Like Friday and Saturday, getting a ride to the train station in Northwood with my nieces on their way to work put me in the City way before the museums opened, so I walked around a bit first. I came across this plaque for the guy that river is named after. "Studied here" it says. What it doesn't say is that he was *put* in here because his father died and his mother had no income. He was taught navigation with an eye making him useful in the Royal Navy. In other words, he taken from his mother, dumped in a boarding school, and trained for military service. The school, however, decided to pay the Hudson's Bay Company to "train him as a clerk." So at 14 he became an indentured servant, not much better than a slave, for a 7-year term. The school didn't sell him into indentured servitude, they *paid* to have him taken off their hands. The HBC put him on a boat and sent him to Churchill, Manitoba to work as a scrivener.

[March 8] This amused me. A caf named "Splash" that was closed due to flooding.

[March 8] I've heard Victoria described as "everything every British seaside town wants to be, but can't because of the weather." Hastings, despite some neat old hotels, was really pretty grotty. Note the sad, tattered palm trees along the right side of the picture. There were some fantastically tacky attractions like the "Smugglers Adventure" where (from their website [with my comments] "Youll be greeted by over 70 life-sized [badly painted, fiberglass] smuggler characters who will open your eyes to the dangerous and often blood-thirsty smuggling lifestyle." Turns out the same outfit also runs the castle tours. It's a little boggling that the castle isn't managed by British Heritage like Battle Abbey, given its significance. As we were in the in pub we tried to figure out our next move and discovered that the castle closes ridiculously early in the afternoon and there was no way we were going to make it.
