WHSP FUBAR'd VMS RAID

*ugh* E-mail for mbarrick.net, mbarrick.com and gothic.bc.ca (and less-importantly, araneum.ca) has been down since the wee hours of Sunday morning. I didn't even notice until Sunday night because I got off to such a slow start yesterday. And it's not just ordinary 'just restart the service' down, but 'hosting company managed to have a catastrophic RAID failure that took out a whole bank of virtual servers' down / 'full restore over a slow connection' down.

Go Crawl Yourself

First off, happy new year, blah, blah, blah, [insert navel-gazing year-in-review/big-plans-for-2008 post here]. There, that's done.

At the moment I'm working on some post-relaunch tweaks for Gothic BC and was looking at the logs. In between the people who think I get up at 6:00 a.m. after getting in from the club at 5:00 a.m. and am going to magically download and catalogue 400 photos off my camera, weed through them for the 150 or so worth posting, processes them, and have them posted on the site by 6:15 a.m. (reality: I got up about an hour ago and the camera is still in the bag) who are already scouring the site for last night's pictures, there are a gazillion hits from someone crawling the site for video content with a VEOH client.

This is uncool. First off, there is no video content on Gothic BC, nor will there be for some time to come, if ever. Secondly, as I understand it VEOH is effectively a P2P service which would mean I could potentially have dozens of these clients crawling the site effectively amounting to, given my limited bandwidth, a DDoS attack. No thanks.

Apache rewrite module to the rescue:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} veoh [NC]

RewriteRule .* http://www.veoh.com/ [F,L]

Fighting my Daemons

I am going to do paint. I am not going to waste many, many hours installing a Jabber daemon to add live chat to Gothic BC for no good reason other than a whim to fool with it.

Must...  resist... geeking... out...

¡H@x0rèd again!

Fer fuck's sake. In addition to the lame-o virus thing I noticed a crapload of (failed) DoS attacks against my webserver. Sorry, script-kiddies, if you want to find a vulnerable webserver, go attack a bank.

Dumbasses

Some idiot in California mailed me a virus amateurishly disguised as a zip file of photos for the Gothic BC site. This is what I have to contend with. Fortunately I'm not an idiot. But really, this is the kind of thing I was bitching about the other day. Somebody tell me again why I should bother?

The saga continues.

Apparently the student loan people received the money and it hasn't been returned. They've ripped me off for $500. Isn't that just lovely. The bank has contacted them directly to get the money back. Meanwhile I still have enough money for rent, but nothing else.
