Vidma is unimpressed and we don't even have to leave for over an hour, but, from experience, this is better than having to spend that hour chasing her and overturning all the furniture. Age and treachery once again defeats youth and vigour. via Instagram

Vidma has been hanging out in the carrier by choice every morning for just over a week now. I *really* hope she does this tomorrow, too, because she has a veterinary appointment. via Instagram

Sci-fi loves faster-than-light travel, and it is not uncommon to say that interstellar travel is impossible without it. But a more realistically surmountable way of accomplishing it is immortality. Travel time stops mattering. Time-dialation stops mattering. Three hundred years of ship-time to get somewhere while three thousand years passes back home? No problem. Another hundred years to send a message home and a hundred more for a reply? NBD. via Instagram

"The Cloud Minders"

LiveJournal - Mon, 2024/02/05 - 8:13pm

"The Cloud Minders" They hang a lantern on "troglyte" being derived from "troglodyte", meaning cave-dweller. The word comes from the Greek 'trōglodutēs'. What they don't explain, but I love, is the mineral the troglytes mine, that the Enterprise needs, is called "zenite". 'Xenos' is ancient Greek for "foreigner". It shows up in English in the word xenophobia (fear of foreigners) and is us used as a prefix in medicine meaning "not human" (xenograft, xenotransplant) and in science meaning "alien" (xenobiology). Basically "zenite" is a more clever version of the sci-fi classic "unobtanium". via Instagram
